Experience

I came back to the United States after living most of my early life in the Dominican Republic in order to pursue post-secondary studies in the physical sciences. I majored in biology, chemistry, and mathematics at Manhattanville College and graduated with departmental and Summa Cum Laude honors. I then got my Masters of Science in Mathematics from New York University. Why? Although I always enjoyed those subjects growing up, my professors showed me how elegant and fascinating the more abstract topics, especially in mathematics, can be. Working diligently to solve harder problems and learning how to write logical proofs for complex theorems became very addictive. Nonetheless, it was the encouragement and clear explanations of my favorite professors that kept me engaged with the material. Now, I absolutely enjoy my work as a tutor in math, science, and Spanish. I have been tutoring for the past 18 years and have helped hundreds of students reach their full academic potential. I emphasize practice, practice, and more practice when it comes down to math problems. I also love to take a minute every now and then to point out why a certain formula or process is rigorous and precise. I relish the logic behind mathematical proofs and wish to help my students appreciate the unique elegance of such a demonstration. By sharing some of my excitement with my students and allowing them to reach their own insights, I seek to help them become more engrossed with the content until it's no longer intimidating, but merely a collection of familiar concepts. Additionally, as a native Spanish speaker, I am fully aware of the difficulty of learning languages and know what students need in order to be engaged as they start rolling their R's or memorize stem-changing verbs. Overall, I use a calm approach and actively seek to fill the gaps in understanding my students may have. Over the years, I learned that patiently and carefully explaining ideas from different perspectives makes a dramatic difference in my students' learning experience. Moreover, I encourage discussion with my students so as to fully develop motivation, analytical thinking, and focus. Hence, they know they can count on me for help with their coursework as my sessions provide a relaxed learning environment that bolsters their understanding and sense of accomplishment. For 2018, my standard hourly rate is $60 per hour for one-on-one tutoring sessions. Please contact me directly for references, official transcripts, and copies of my standardized test scores. Unfortunately, if you cancel or wish to reschedule a session without giving me 24 hour advanced notice, I will have to assess a fee equivalent to one hour's worth of tutoring. These are honors and awards I have received: SACNAS National Conference Travel Scholarship (10/2008); Summa Cum Laude (05/2008); Manhattanville College Board of Trustees Scholarship (09/2004-05/2008); Dean’s List (09/2004-05/2008); POLYED Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry (04/2006); American Chemical Society and CRC Press Freshman Chemistry Awards (04/2005); Valedictorian (06/2004).

Hobbies

I enjoy reading and learning new things on YouTube when I get back home and urgently want to forget about traffic. Traveling to other countries is something I look forward to. I've been to: China, Australia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Spain, Puerto Rico, Germany, Croatia, Austria, and Peru. Making friends across the globe and exploring new cities is always a fun way to create wonderful and unique memories. Whenever I have time, I love to walk for hours in nature. In the Midwest, I highly recommend Voyageurs National Park, state parks in Ohio and Indiana, Badlands National Park, and Cuyahoga National Park. If you're in Croatia, check out the Plitvice Jezera. And yes, the long bus ride from Zagreb is completely worth it! By the way, hiking along the Alps around Innsbruck in Austria is phenomenal. Gardening, by which I mean watching the backyard become a wild meadow, is relaxing. Basil is my favorite herb, but it's rival is definitely Bärlauch. They make fantastic pesto sauces. It's calming to walk around the blackberry bushes and fig trees, and it's even better when their fruits are finally ripe.
